“I am” statements help to tap into the power of the present moment and our own sense of self, allowing us to speak with conviction and confidence about our desired outcomes.
They also activate a part of the brain called the reticular activating system (RAS); this is responsible for filtering out irrelevant information and focusing our attention on what is important. By repeating “I am” affirmations, we signal to our brain that these beliefs are important to us and worthy of attention. This allows our brain to look out for things that match what we keep repeating and attract our desires.
A study published in the journal Social Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience found that self-affirmation can reduce stress and improve performance in high-pressure situations. The study used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to observe brain activity in participants who were asked to perform a challenging task while under stress. The results showed that participants who engaged in self-affirmation prior to the task showed less stress-related activity in the brain and performed better than those who did not engage in self-affirmation. This study provides evidence that affirmations can have a real impact on our mindset and performance, and that “I am” affirmations in particular can be a powerful tool for manifesting success and achieving our goals.
